Listed here are the units of competency from the current National Outdoor Recreation Training Package. These have been provided to enable leaders to benchmark their skills and experience.

Leaders in this activity should be confident that they have the skills and knowledge, at least equivalent to that described by the following selected units, relevant to the competency levels within the activity (where applicable).

Sea Guide (Level 2)

Qualification Definition
Holders of a Sea Guide (level 2) award have been assessed and are qualified to lead / guide novice groups on trips and expeditions in moderate sea conditions. Moderate sea conditions are defined as areas where the coastline may be simple, not involving overfalls, tidal races, difficult landings or open crossings and

  • minimum winds of 7-10 knots (12-19 km/h)
  • breaking waves (up to 1. 0 m)
  • small surf (0.5 to 1.0 m)

A Sea Guide (level 2) has demonstrated that they have a high standard of teaching and paddling ability. A guide is only qualified to impart skills or knowledge that is necessary for a person to participate safely and adequately in canoeing and kayaking.

At the end of a session or program with a guide, the intent is not for the participant to have acquired the skills to independently participate in the activity.

VET Prerequisites
Candidates must hold the VET units of competence for the Australian Canoeing Sea Leaders Award

Areas of Competency
The holders of this award have been assessed at sea in real conditions and have demonstrated the ability to work as a Guide moderate sea conditions. Specific areas covered include:

  • High level commercial guiding skills
  • Understanding and operation of communication systems
  • Ability to set up and run overnight and expedition programs
  • Ability to organise individual activities as well as whole programs and skill development programs

Units of Competency
Having completed the award, the holder will have met or exceeded all of the following requirements of the Units of Competence from the Outdoor Recreation Training Package SRO03 and will be awarded a statement of attainment covering those units.

Sea Instructor (Level 2)

Qualification Definition
Holders of a Sea Instructor (level 2) award have been assessed and are qualified to instruct, facilitate skill transfer to develop participants in order so that they may act independently or with minimum supervision in moderate sea conditions.
Moderate sea conditions are defined as areas where the coastline may be simple, not involving overfalls, tidal races, difficult landings or open crossings and

  • minimum winds of 7-10 knots (12-19 km/h)
  • breaking waves (up to 1. 0 m)
  • small surf (0.5 to 1.0 m)

This requires the instructor to be able to critique technique, apply a variety of appropriate instructional strategies, and may require them to assess participants' skill acquisition at the end of the program. A Sea Instructor (level 2) is qualified to act in the capacity defined as a Sea Guide (level 2).

VET Prerequisites
Candidates must hold the VET units of competence for the Australian Canoeing Sea Leaders Award

Advanced Sea Guide (Level 3)

Qualification Definition
Holders of the Advanced Sea Guide Award have been assessed and are qualified to lead groups on expeditions in difficult sea conditions that include:

  • open crossings (min 3 nautical miles from any shoreline) with wind speeds of 10-21 knots (19-38km/hr)
    wave heights of at least 1.0m
    surf launching and landing in surf of up to 2.0m.

They have demonstrated competence at the Advanced Sea Skills levels and also
Evidence of competent guiding of 3 different client groups in different areas of advanced sea.

The ability to impart the skills and knowledge required for clients to be competent for a guided advanced sea trip.

An advanced level of guiding skills including the ability to deal with the following in advanced sea conditions:

  • different client needs
  • different activity aims
  • different types of client groups
  • different activity duration
  • different environmental conditions

Advanced Sea Instructor (Level 3)

Qualification Definition
Holders of the Advanced Sea Instructor (level 3) Award have been assessed and are qualified to instruct, facilitate skill transfer to develop participants in order so that they may act independently or with minimum supervision in difficult sea conditions, defined as:

They have demonstrated competence at the requirements for the Advanced Sea Skills and Advanced Sea Guides (level 3) awards and the following:

  • Competent instructing of advanced sea skills to 4 different client groups in different areas of advanced sea.
  • sufficient knowledge of teaching principles and techniques to enable the planning and conduct of a sea kayaking instruction session or program on advanced sea that enables clients to achieve proficiency in advanced sea conditions.

The ability to:

  • demonstrate and instruct (teach) advanced sea kayaking techniques or skills accurately
  • establish a positive learning environment
  • recognise different client abilities and teach to suit individual needs
  • provide constructive feedback which enhances the client''s learning

  • Plan and coordinate advanced sea kayaking activities
  • Lead advanced sea expeditions and training programs
  • Effectively teach and demonstrate response to emergency situations
  • Effectively teach and demonstrate the conducting and coordinating of rescues in advanced sea conditions
