Canoeing / Kayaking (Flatwater)

Listed here are the units of competency from the current National Outdoor Recreation Training Package. These have been provided to enable leaders to benchmark their skills and experience.

Leaders in this activity should be confident that they have the skills and knowledge, at least equivalent to that described by the following selected units, relevant to the competency levels within the activity (where applicable).

Flatwater (Inland) Guide (Level 1)

Qualification Definition
Holders of the Flatwater (Inland) Guide (Level 1) Award have been assessed and are qualified to lead / guide expeditions on inland waters such as open lakes and rivers (but not on whitewater or sea) in controlled conditions for inland kayaking and canoeing which include:

  • sheltered and calm waters
  • minimal wind
  • ease of access to shore

They have demonstrated a high standard of teaching and paddling ability. A guide only imparts skills or knowledge necessary for a person to participate safely and adequately in a canoeing or kayaking activity.

At the end of a session or program with a guide, the intent is not for the participant to have acquired the skills to independently participate in the activity.
This award specifically excludes:

  • flowing water
  • dangerous or exposed areas.

VET Prerequisites
Candidates must hold the VET units of competence for the Australian Canoeing Flatwater (Inland) Skills Award

Areas of Competency
The holders of this award have been assessed in real conditions and have demonstrated the ability to work as a guide on inland water. Specific areas covered include:

  • Simple paddling skills to a high standard of efficiency and safety
  • Rescues including towing practices
  • Preparing and planning canoeing and kayaking expeditions for clients
  • Conducting overnight expeditions
  • Occupational Health and Safety procedures and risk management appropriate to the activity
  • Leadership skills
  • Commercial guiding skills

Units of Competence
Having completed the award, the holder will have met or exceeded all of the following requirements of the Units of Competence from the Outdoor Recreations Training Packageand will be awarded a statement of attainment covering those units.

Flatwater (Inland) Instructor (level 1)

Qualification Definition
Holders of the Flatwater (Inland) Instructor (Level 1) Award have been assessed at and are qualified to instruct, facilitate skill transfer to develop participants in order so that they may act independently or with minimal supervision in controlled conditions for inland kayaking and canoeing which include:

  • sheltered and calm waters
  • minimal wind
  • ease of access to shore
  • minimal flow of water

This requires the Instructor to be able to critique technique, apply a variety of appropriate instructional strategies, and may require them to assess participants' skill acquisition at the end of a program or session.

Flatwater (Inland) Instructors are also qualified to lead expeditions on inland waters such as open lakes and rivers (but not on Whitewater or at sea).
This award specifically excludes dangerous or exposed areas.
